The Federal Capital Territory’s chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers plans to embark on an indefinite strike if their demands are unmet.

Last Thursday, the Union commenced a five-day warning strike to demand enhanced security in schools and payment of arrears of promotion benefits.

The FCT Minister, Mohammed Bello, had met with the FCT Chairman of the NUT, Stephen Knabayi, on the same day, promising to pay the area before the year ends although an agreement has not been reached with the six area council chairmen.

Speaking with The Punch on Monday, Knabayi insisted that the union would not call off the strike, adding that it would immediately commence an indefinite strike when the warning strike ends.

He accused the chairmen of not meeting with the teachers.
He said, “The area council chairmen are yet to reach out to us, you can help us find out why they are yet to do so.

“Once this warning strike ends, the next thing is to proceed on an indefinite one.

“We have been patient enough and we have shifted ground also through our patience. We are talking of arrears since 2015 what else do you want us to do?

“For now, I am not even sure that if they call for a meeting, we will attend.”
