Father remanded for alleged defilement of daughter

In a shocking development, a 55-year-old man, Pius Promise, has been remanded in a correctional center by the Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defiling his own daughter. The accused was charged with defilement by the police.

During the court proceedings, Magistrate Mrs. E. Kubeinje refused to take the accused’s plea and ordered that his case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice. The magistrate adjourned the case until August 7th to await the DPP’s guidance.

According to Insp. John Iberedem, the prosecutor, the accused committed the offense over a period spanning from 2015 to 2022, at Clinic Street, Iba, New Site, Ojo, Lagos. It has been alleged that Promise repeatedly sexually assaulted his daughter when she was a minor, continuing until she turned 18 years old and finally found the courage to speak up and report the abuse.

Iberedem revealed the horrifying details of the abuse, stating that the accused inserted an egg into his daughter’s vagina and also used his fingers to penetrate her. Additionally, he sexually assaulted her by sucking her breast and vagina.

The alleged actions of Promise violate Sections 261 and 263 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015. These sections stipulate life imprisonment for anyone found guilty of penetrating another’s anus, vagina, mouth, or any other body part without their consent. It also imposes a three-year prison term for anyone found guilty of non-consensual sexual touching.

The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting the need for comprehensive measures to protect minors against such heinous crimes.
