False pretense: Man extort N1.2m from jobseekers
A young man, under false pretenses extorted about N1.2m from three people seeking for jobs.
The young man, identified as Ekene Itodo, 28 appeared at an Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court, Lagos State for allegedly obtaining N1.2m from three people under false pretenses of securing jobs for them.
As reported by News Agency of Nigeria, the fraudster pleaded not guilty after he was charged to court on five counts bordering on conspiracy, fraud and breach of peace.
The prosecutor, ASP Benedict Aigbokhan, told the court that the criminal act was committed by the defendant and his accomplice, who is currently at large on January 30 and February 6, 2023, on Ayerowi Street, Igando, Lagos.
According to Aigbokhan, the defendant duped the victims as he obtained N550,000 from one Mr Benedict Okon; N500, 000 from one Mr Sampon Sunday and N170,000 from one Felix Musa, summing to about N1.2m in total.
The prosecutor said the defendant did not get the jobs as promised, but converted the money to personal use.
The offences, however, contravened Sections 168, 172, 272, 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The Magistrate, Miss K. A. Ariyo, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned until March 10 for mention.

Meanwhile, a few days ago, it was alleged that gunmen bombed the television and radio stations owned by Dr. Chinyere Igwe, a member of the House of Representatives.
However, very early on Friday morning, Dr. Igwe was arrested on Ana Road in Port Harcourt, with a large sum of money in dollars. The police confirmed that the total sum was $498,100 USD, and they also found a list of people the money was intended for.
