Election Violence Erupts Outside Oba Elegushi Palace as Ballot Boxes are Snatched

Former Secretary to the State Government in Delta, Ovuozourie Macaulay, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing “impunity, blackmail, falsehood and disregard for party rules” by the party leadership.

In his signed resignation letter dated March 4, 2023, Macaulay addressed the PDP Chairman in Ward 5, Owhelogbo, Isoko North Local Government Area of the state.

Macaulay, a former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Delta State chapter and former member of the State Executive Council under the administration of ex-Governor James Onanefe Ibori, stated in his resignation letter that he had “painfully endured the arrogance and misdemeanour of the Party leadership and actually appealed for a change to no avail.”

He further added, “Thus, I am left with no choice but to bow out of the Party.” Macaulay’s resignation comes as a shock to the PDP, especially in Delta State, where the party has been dominant in recent years.

The PDP has not yet released an official statement on Macaulay’s resignation. However, some party members have expressed concern over the move, saying it could affect the party’s chances in the upcoming elections.

Macaulay’s resignation is not the first from the PDP, as the party has been experiencing a wave of defections in recent months.

In January, the former Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Ahmad Aliyu, defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In February, the PDP also lost a member of the House of Representatives, Ossai Ossai, who defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

These defections have caused concern among party members and supporters, with some questioning the leadership style of the PDP.
