John Okafor, famously known to fans as Mr. Ibu indeed was a comedian who never had to do much to make people happy or laugh, but despite his humorous persona, he wasn’t at all happy every step of his days.

A lot was said about the Nollywood icon and veteran, many reports were made out of nothing and of something to stay on the trend and to keep the flames burning. Blames were thrown about to whomever was close to the actor and whomever stood distant or distantly connected to Mr. Ibu.

Life is never a bed of roses, but Mr. Ibu’s story had quite a lot of thorns thrown his way prior and after his death.

Prior to his demise, various events and controversies marked Mr Ibu’s life, shaping public perception and adding layers to his colorful persona.

During a period of ill-health, generous donations poured in from well-wishers and public figures to support Mr Ibu’s medical expenses.

However, a cloud of controversy emerged when allegations of embezzlement surfaced, implicating his adopted daughter, Jasmine, and son, Valentine Okafor.

Accusations and counter-accusations between Mr Ibu’s wife, Stella Maris, and Jasmine further fueled the controversy, culminating in arrests and subsequent withdrawal of charges.

In 2014, concerns arose over Mr Ibu’s health when he disclosed being poisoned by a worker, resulting in severe digestive issues. The actor attributed the poisoning to a bloated stomach and revealed enduring consequences on his digestive system.

Earlier in 2023, prior to his deteriorating health, Mr Ibu’s wife accused Jasmine of engaging in an illicit affair with her husband, a claim vehemently denied by Jasmine, who maintained a daughter-father relationship with the actor.

The actor’s health struggles continued when his leg was amputated in 2023, sparking rumors of diabetes-related complications. However, Mr Ibu’s family clarified that his condition stemmed from blood clotting and vascular disease, dispelling speculations.

In an interview with PUNCH, Mr Ibu opened up about his tumultuous marital life, disclosing five marriages and expressing profound unhappiness in his current union with Stella Maris.

“This is my final marriage,” Mr Ibu lamented, highlighting the strain and despair he endured. “This feels like punishment and not marriage,” he added, reflecting on the challenges he faced.

Mr Ibu succumbed to cardiac arrest at the age of 62 on Saturday, leaving behind a legacy cherished by fans and colleagues alike.
