Everton to appeal 10 points deduction by the Premier League

Merseyside club, Everton currently face relegation after being docked 10-points by the Premier League over Financial Fair Play breach, in a move that has created quite the stir online.

Amidst a mixed season for the Toffees, Everton is dealt a severe blow by the Premier League, in a 10-point deduction for breaching the league’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs) that could cost the club their premier league spot next season.

The punishment, confirmed by an independent commission, places Everton on the brink of the relegation zone, sparking shock and controversy within the footballing world.

With their tally plummeting to a mere four points, Everton finds themselves in 19th place, just above Burnley, who narrowly escape the bottom spot due to an inferior goal difference.

This deduction marks only the second time in Premier League history that a team has faced such a severe penalty, echoing the ordeal faced by Portsmouth years before.

The Premier League’s statement clarified that during proceedings, Everton admitted to violating the PSRs for the period ending in the 2021/22 season.

However, disputes over the extent of the breach ensued. The commission’s rigorous examination revealed a financial loss of £124.5 million, surpassing the £105 million threshold permitted under the PSRs, resulting in the imposition of the 10-point deduction effective immediately.

Amidst this verdict, Everton has expressed profound shock and disappointment, declaring the sanction as disproportionate and unjust.

The club intends to appeal the decision, firmly maintaining its transparency and integrity throughout the process. Everton vehemently contests the assertion that it acted in anything but good faith, challenging the severity of the imposed penalty.

The news has sparked discussions across football circles, with Everton’s precarious position in the league table looming large pending the appeal process. Sean Dyche’s side, now in 19th place, eyes a crucial encounter against Manchester United in hopes of clawing their way out of the relegation zone.

This unprecedented turn of events has shuffled the Premier League’s bottom six, with Everton’s deduction propelling Luton to 17th place and Sheffield United to 18th, intensifying the fight to avoid relegation.

The current standings now read: 15. Fulham (12pts)

  1. Bournemouth (9pts)
  2. Luton (6pts)
  3. Sheffield United (5pts)
  4. Everton (4pts)
  5. Burnley (4pts)

Everton’s statement to being docked 10 points;

Everton Football Club is both shocked and disappointed by the ruling of the Premier League’s Commission.

The Club believes that the Commission has imposed a wholly disproportionate and unjust sporting sanction. The Club has already communicated its intention to appeal the decision to the Premier League.

The appeal process will now commence and the Club’s case will be heard by an Appeal Board appointed pursuant to the Premier League’s rules in due course.

Everton maintains that it has been open and transparent in the information it has provided to the Premier League and that it has always respected the integrity of the process.

The Club does not recognize the finding that it failed to act with the utmost good faith and it does not understand this to have been an allegation made by
the Premier League during the course of proceedings.

Both the harshness and severity of the sanction imposed by the Commission are neither a fair nor a reasonable reflection of the evidence submitted.

The Club will also monitor with great interest the decisions made in any other cases concerning the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Everton cannot comment on this matter any further until the appeal process has concluded.
