Euro 2024 final: What Spain and England stand to lose?

The stakes are sky-high as Spain and England prepare to clash in Sunday’s Euro 2024 final, with a potential windfall awaiting the winners.

Luis de la Fuente’s Spain, currently in red-hot form, is eyeing not just the glory of a record fourth Euros title but also a massive financial bonus. Meanwhile, Gareth Southgate’s England squad, less focused on the monetary reward, is driven by a desire to bring joy to a nation in need of a morale boost.

Spain’s Road to Riches

Spain’s journey to the final has been nothing short of spectacular. With dominant performances against Croatia, Italy, and Albania in Group B, and subsequent victories over Georgia, Germany, and France, La Roja have shown they are a force to be reckoned with. If they maintain this momentum and defeat England, each player stands to pocket a whopping €400,000 (£336,000), thanks to a pre-tournament agreement that allocates a substantial portion of the prize money to the squad.

UEFA has confirmed that the winners of Euro 2024 final will receive up to €28.25 million (£24.2m). For Spain, 30% of this sum is guaranteed to the players regardless of the outcome, but the figure jumps to 40% if they lift the trophy. This means a potential total payout of €11.3 million (£9.7m) for the squad, with a share also going to Luis de la Fuente and his coaching team.

England’s Focus on Glory

On the other hand, England’s players reportedly view the financial incentive as a low priority. According to the Daily Telegraph, most of the squad are unaware of the exact amount they could earn from a victory in the Euro 2024 final.

However, should they win, a bonus pot worth up to £10 million will be shared among them. For Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate, the primary goal is to secure a historic victory and bring “temporary happiness” to an “angry country.”

Southgate’s determination to win is palpable.

“I want to win so much on Sunday it hurts, don’t get me wrong, but I can handle whatever comes and I know it’s not going to change what the dog thinks when I walk back through the door,” he said ahead of the final.

The Ultimate Prize

While the financial rewards are substantial, the true prize lies in the glory of being crowned champions of Europe.
