Erik ten Hag told to drop Fernandes as Man United Captain

Former Chelsea player turned pundit, Chris Sutton want Bruno Fernandes dropped as Manchester United captain.

His reasoning comes in response to a recent outburst in the fixture against Tottenham Hotspur that resulted in a defeat for the Red Devils.

During the match, the Portugal international cut a frustrated figure with the match day official, leading to a booking by the referee on the day, Michael Oliver for dissent.

In the post-match interview following the defeat, the former Sporting Lisbon star was seen demanding an ‘apology’ from the refereeing body, PGMOL in reaction to a penalty not being awarded for a handball in the penalty box against Cristian Romero.

For Chris Sutton however, he feels Bruno Fernandes’ comments and reactions went against what the armband represented for a player playing for Manchester United.

According to Sutton, Fernandes’ actions showed he wasn’t a leader and not befitting to wear the armband.

Speaking on the podcast, It’s All Kicking Off, Chris Sutton criticized the Man United captain while siding with the referee, stating;

“Absolutely not. Bruno Fernandes first and foremost needs to sort himself out, his team out, before looking at referees and their decisions.

“Bruno Fernandes for me should not be captain of Manchester United, absolutely not, he’s not a leader. That basically sums him up.

“It is about taking responsibility as a captain and the bottom line is, the first two performances of the season for Manchester United they have looked like a testimonial team.

“They are like a team that is still stuck in pre-season and he needs to turn up and show better leadership qualities – not blaming referees.”

The 28-year-old was recently made captain of the Old Trafford side prior to the start of the premier league season, taking over the armband from Man United outcast, Harry Maguire.
