Erik ten Hag regretting his David De Gea decision
Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag may now be regretting his decision to let David De Gea depart the club as Man United fans take over the internet.
Manchester United’s recent struggles, with the club suffering their fifth defeat in seven games at the hands of Galatasaray, has sent United fans ruing the exit of former goalie, David De Gea.
The Spaniard’s name was all that trended on social media following the 3-2 defeat to the Turkish side.
The Spanish goalkeeper left the club in July after a 12-year tenure, much to the worry of the Manchester United fanbase prior to the season began, with Erik ten Hag choosing to go for former Ajax player, Andre Onana.
However, that decision hasn’t sat down well with the fanbase, and if any noise about that decision wasn’t made before now, the Champions League tie versus Galatasaray was the excuse fans needed to voice their sentiments.
The defeat to the Turkish side was Galatasaray’s first-ever win on English soil in their 117-year history.
The Red Devils endured a turbulent match, with costly errors from several players, including Andre Onana, Raphael Varane, Sofyan Amrabat, and Casemiro, contributing to their disappointing performance.
In particular, Casemiro’s 77th-minute penalty foul on Dries Mertens, followed by a second yellow card for a wayward pass from Onana, marred the match.
Onana’s performance between the posts also drew criticism, especially when he failed to stop Mauro Icardi’s goal, raising questions about his positioning.
In light of Onana’s performance, former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea found himself trending on social media. Fans flooded platforms with heartfelt messages of appreciation for the Spanish shot-stopper. One fan suggested,
“David de Gea deserves a statue outside Old Trafford for the way he kept Manchester United in the game over and over again,” while another pleaded,
“David De Gea… I apologize on behalf of all Manchester United fans. Please forgive us.”
Another fan urged coach Erik ten Hag to make bold decisions, stating,
“If Ten Hag claims he’s ruthless and can axe club legends like Ronaldo and De Gea, then he should have the guts to bench Onana in our upcoming matches. We’ve seen enough already.”
A fourth fan chimed in, expressing disappointment in the recent goalkeeping changes, noting,
“Getting rid of De Gea and Henderson and bringing in Onana and Bayindir might be the biggest downgrade in the history of Manchester United.”
David de Gea’s departure from Manchester United in July came after the failure to agree on a new contract.
The 32-year-old goalkeeper cited his desire for a new challenge and the opportunity to push himself in new surroundings. Despite leaving the club, De Gea remains a free agent.
