EPL: The Red Devils go marching in on the Saints

The Saints did not go marching in, this time around, it is the Red Devils whose light shone at the Saint Mary’s.

Manchester United needed a desperate win after the 0-3 defeat to Liverpool prior to the international weekend, and what a way to bounce back than to hand their opponents a replica of the 0-3 score line they were dealt with.

The Red Devils indeed had to go all out to nab the win at the Saint Mary’s. Judging from how Southampton started the game, it was evident the Saints had already lost the tie even before the whistle was blown. The Saints on their part, were given the rarest of opportunities to take the lead in the 32nd minute via a penalty that was awarded them.

However, forward man, Cameron Archer, played  the villain against his own team by failing to convert the spot kick that would have riled the internet and added more misery for the Red Devils who came to the South Coast of England, desperate for a win.

Archer’s folly would then be punished by Manchester United defender and summer signing; Matthijs de Ligt who stepped forward to put his team 1-0 ahead and shame whatever narratives may have emerged had his side delayed opening the score sheet.

De Ligt’s goal opened the flood gates at the Saint Mary’s, and inevitably broke the jinx and the scoring draught of Marcus Rashford who was on hand to help the Red Devils double their lead and add more misery to the humble Saints.

Southampton on their part, were their own nemesis, with defender Jack Stephens receiving marching orders for his reckless tackle on Alejandro Garnacho, reducing the Saints to 10-men.

The Manchester United substitute added more misery on the hosts after he tripled the Red Devils’ lead in the 90th minute to balance their goal difference deficit from 2-weeks back.

Erik ten Hag’s side following the 3-0 victory versus Southampton, have now given themselves a breather from the press as they look forward to other games ahead of them.
