Far too many of us are envious. But envy of other people can kill your own potential, motivation and creativity, leaving you miles off your personal goals. It’s so easy to get on social media and scroll through our news feeds, murmuring and envying our friends who seem to smashing their goals and doing much better than us. We are so focused on other people, that we don’t even bother to try to find out own path to success. Envy really can ruin your life. Instead of focusing on other people, shift the focus back onto your own life and what YOU can accomplish.

Here are a few tips on how to get rid of envy:

Is Their Life Really What You Want

Think about it for a second. Is the life you envy really the one you want? If it is, why haven’t you taken the necessary steps to get that life yet? Maybe it’s because you don’t actually want to make all the sacrifices a person had to make to get where they are today. It’s so easy for us to wistfully wish we can have someone else’s life. You are moving along at your own pace right now. You have built your own relationships, and you are free to make adjustments if you want to be happier.

You may just need to make a few minor changes to your own life that could create a substantially brighter future for yourself.

Be Grateful For The Awesome Things You Have In Your Life

One of the good tips on how to get rid of envy is to take a moment to think about all the awesome things you have in your life that you should be grateful for. Write them down. This can include things such as your health, your family, your friends, your job, the fact that you’re alive and live in a free country which gives you the chance to further your career and life. Most times, we are too focused on the things we envy that we forget appreciate what we already have. You have got more advantages than most in this life. Use them.

Hang Out With Grateful People

To help with your own sense of gratitude, hang out with grateful people. You will soon find that gratitude just like love or hate is infectious. Grateful people will teach you how to be grateful. Just spend some time with them and watch them in action. Watch how they appreciate every little thing they have. Let their good spirits radiate into you.

Remember That No One Has The Perfect Life

A lot of the times, we envy other people because we assume that they have the perfect life. They have the perfect home, the perfect relationship, and the perfect family and so on. But these assumptions are built on flimsy evidence. We see a few smiley photographs uploaded to social media, and we assume this must mean that their life is always picture perfect. Far from it! You might be envying someone for something they are not even happy with. Nobody has the perfect life, and certainly not everyone is happy with what they are. Most people probably want more. Be careful for what you envy someone for. It may turn out that they have more anxiety, worry and even misery than others.

Praise Others

Take a moment to eliminate envy from your list of values, and replace it with “give praise”. Write down your list of values and put this one near the top. Then, start to live by this value. Instead of responding with your usual feelings of envy whenever a friend achieves success, give them praise.

Be Kind To Others

Lastly, practice kindness to other people. Volunteer. Give them your time. Help others who are less fortunate than you. The more you give, the more you will get back in the form of a nourished soul. Being kind to those less fortunate than you also reminds you that there is a lot of things other people probably should be envying, such as your awesome life.
