Enugu governor Peter Mbah highlights key achievements in first year
Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has highlighted the significant progress his administration has made in the past year, reaffirming his commitment to transforming Enugu into a premier destination for investment, business, tourism, and living.
Governor Mbah emphasized his administration’s goal to grow the state’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion during a 48-minute broadcast on Wednesday, marking his first anniversary in office.
Governor Mbah credited the administration’s adherence to the Citizens’ Charter, which he signed on May 29, 2023, for the remarkable improvements across various sectors, including security, water supply, infrastructure, education, health, and economic revitalization.
Key Achievements
The governor reported a significant drop in crime due to enhanced security measures, such as establishing a state-of-the-art Security Command Centre and a Security Trust Fund.
Water Supply: Mbah highlighted the increase in daily water supply to Enugu municipal from 2 million litres to 120 million litres, despite challenges with old infrastructure.
Infrastructure: Contracts for 71 urban roads and 10 major rural roads have been awarded. Additionally, a new asphalt production plant capable of producing over 1,000 tons of eco-friendly asphalt daily has been acquired to expedite road improvements.
Education: The administration launched the Smart Green School initiative, with the prototype operational in Owo. This project includes the construction of 260 modern schools equipped with advanced technology.
Health: Construction of 260 Type 2 primary healthcare facilities is underway, focusing on digitizing patient records and improving healthcare worker welfare.
Economic Revitalization: Efforts to revive long-abandoned assets like the Presidential Hotel and various agro-industrial projects are progressing. A $100 billion partnership aims to rejuvenate United Palm Products Ltd.
Agriculture: The state has designated 100,000 hectares for cash crop cultivation and established a land bank for agricultural investment partnerships.
Energy: The Enugu State Electricity Law and establishing the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission are significant steps towards ensuring reliable power supply.
Judiciary: Major reforms include digitising court processes and creating specialized courts to enhance access to justice.
Transportation: The administration procures 150 CNG buses and over 2,000 taxis to improve public transit.
Waste Management: A restructured waste management system with private sector participation has greatly improved efficiency and cleanliness.
Climate Change: Enugu is set to secure an N100 million grant for developing a comprehensive climate change policy, positioning the state as a leader in sustainable development.

“The significant improvements across various sectors have vindicated our efforts. We are on course to meet all our campaign promises and vision,” Mbah stated.
