Heavily armed officers of the Nigeria Police fired teargas canisters at peaceful #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters at Eagle Square in the Three Arms Zone, Abuja.

The area houses significant government buildings, including the Presidential Villa, National Assembly, Supreme Court, Federal Secretariat, and the Head of Service.

The #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters, who remained largely peaceful, were demanding an end to hunger among Nigerians. They questioned the police’s aggressive response, contrasting it with the security provided to a pro-government group a few days earlier.

According to the report, the protesters were initially dispersed around 8 am but regrouped and urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and while journalists were attempting to interview some of the protesters, a policeman fired a teargas canister in their direction. This caused many to flee in different directions.

In a dramatic moment, a young woman with a baby approached the policemen, daring them to kill her and her child. Efforts to identify the woman were unsuccessful as police continued to fire teargas canisters at any civilians within sight.

Amidst the chaos, a government official attempted to address the protesters. His initial attempts to speak were drowned out by the loud chants of “hunger dey.”

After identifying himself as a comrade who had attended over 500 protests, the protesters calmed down to listen.

Despite his assurances and promise to address the police regarding the use of teargas, the police continued to fire canisters at the protesters.
