#EndBadGovernance: Agboyi-Ketu LCDA urges residents to shun planned nationwide protest

The Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has called on residents to avoid participating in the planned nationwide protest against economic hardship, emphasizing the need for peace and security in the council area.

The council chairman, Mr. Dele Oshinowo, made this appeal during a stakeholders’ meeting on security and peace held on Monday. Oshinowo acknowledged the challenges facing the country but advocated for dialogue and constructive engagements as the appropriate means to address them.

“There are indeed challenges in the country, but the solution is not through protests, which often result in the destruction of lives, property, and livelihoods,” Oshinowo stated. “We need to embrace peace, dialogue, and discussion. The cost of living is high, we know, but the protests will only exacerbate the suffering of the ordinary man.”

Oshinowo emphasized the collective agreement among Agboyi-Ketu residents, including youths, the elderly, market women, and transporters, to reject protests. He reiterated that while the right to protest is acknowledged, causing mayhem and paralyzing the economy is unacceptable.

“President Bola Tinubu is actively working to revive the nation’s economy and put it on a path to prosperity. His efforts and reforms will soon materialize, and citizens need to be patient,” Oshinowo urged.

He also warned against potential hijacking of the protest by paid elements, stressing the importance of maintaining peace in the area. Oshinowo reminded residents of the devastation caused by the 2020 EndSARS protests, including the burning of more than 200 BRT buses, which primarily affected innocent residents.

Former council chairman, Chief Yetunde Arobieke, also spoke at the meeting, urging Agboyi-Ketu residents to reject the protest, citing the imminent positive impacts of President Tinubu’s reforms. Community influencer Mr. Akeem Oluwa echoed these sentiments, warning against the destructive consequences of protests.

Stakeholders, including market men and women, community leaders, traditional rulers, transport union members, non-indigenes, security agents, students, and teachers, participated in the meeting. They collectively called on the government to expedite actions to tackle inflation and insecurity, enforce price controls, and prevent harassment by security agents.

The meeting concluded with a strong consensus on the need for peace and support for the government’s efforts to address the socio-economic challenges facing the nation.
