Absence of EFCC lead counsel delays Emefiele’s trial

The trial of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, faced a setback on Thursday as the lead counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Rotimi Oyedepo, was absent.

Oyedepo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), had informed the court through a letter that he would be unavailable due to another official engagement.

Consequently, he requested an adjournment of the trial to a date he suggested.

During the court session, one I.D. Ahmed, who represented Emefiele, informed the court about the letter from the prosecution requesting the adjournment.

However, the trial judge, Justice Hamza Muazu, noted that the suggested date by the EFCC counsel was not convenient for the court.

In light of this, Justice Muazu rescheduled the trial to continue on June 24 and 25.

The delay in the trial is related to procurement fraud charges brought against Emefiele by the Federal Government.
