Elon Musk defies EU regulations with bold response
In response to the European Union‘s latest warnings about compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA), Elon Musk has not shied away from his characteristic defiance.
The billionaire, who has previously made headlines for his unfiltered remarks, took to his platform, X, to push back against the EU’s demands.
Referencing a line from the movie Tropic Thunder, Musk posted a meme that seemed to mock Thierry Breton, the EU commissioner responsible for enforcing the DSA. In the post, Musk quoted the movie’s infamous line, “Take a big step back AND LITERALLY F**K YOUR OWN FACE!”, a move that some interpreted as a direct message to the EU’s regulatory body.
To be honest, I really wanted to respond with this Tropic Thunder meme, but I would NEVER do something so rude & irresponsible! https://t.co/jL0GDW5QUx pic.twitter.com/XhUxCSGFNP

Musk’s response comes after the EU sent a letter reminding him of his obligations under the DSA, particularly regarding the spread of illegal content and disinformation on X.
The letter highlighted concerns about Musk’s own use of the platform, warning that his actions could lead to serious consequences, including significant fines or even an EU-wide shutdown of X.
Rather than addressing these concerns directly, Musk appeared to ridicule the EU’s efforts, framing them as an overreach and a possible attempt to censor free speech.
Elon Musk suggested that the EU was trying to interfere with discussions happening outside its borders, a claim he subtly made during an interview with former U.S. President Donald Trump, where he tried to steer the conversation towards criticisms of the EU.
Despite the gravity of the situation, Musk’s approach suggests he is more focused on challenging the EU’s authority than on complying with its regulations.
Whether this strategy will pay off or backfire remains to be seen, but for now, Musk seems determined to push back against what he views as an infringement on free expression.
