Electricity tariff: NLC, TUC issues deadline to NERC, demands reversal to N65/kWh

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have jointly issued a deadline of May 12, 2024, to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), demanding the rollback of the electricity tariff hike to N65/kWh.

Both labour unions have threatened nationwide actions across NERC offices if the demand is not met by the stipulated deadline.

In a letter signed by Comrade Joe Ajaero and Comrade Festus Osifo, Presidents of NLC and TUC respectively, and addressed to the Chairman/CEO of NERC, the unions expressed deep concerns over the recent tariff increase and called for an end to discriminatory practices in electricity billing.

The letter criticized NERC’s decision as morally reprehensible and a violation of statutory obligations, emphasizing the need for fairness and justice in regulating the electricity sector.

“We refuse to accept such exploitation of the masses,” the unions stated, urging NERC to uphold its mandate as an unbiased regulator.

The letter, copied to key government officials and electricity distribution companies, warned of swift and decisive action if NERC fails to comply by May 12, 2024, including mobilizing members to occupy NERC offices nationwide until justice is served.
