Two youths have been remanded by an Ekiti State Chief Magistrate’s Court, Ado Ekiti District, for stabbing a mediator, Alex Aluko.

The defendants, 21-year-old Clement Olusola and 23-year-old Afolayan Opeyemi, were alleged to have attempted to kill Aluko on February 26, 2022.

In his statement to the police, Aluko said there was a misunderstanding between the defendants and his co-tenants, adding that he intervened as a mediator.

He stated, “Not satisfied with my intervention, they started shouting and disturbing the peaceful environment. When I could no longer bear the noise, I left the scene. I was about to enter my room when they broke bottles and stabbed me in the neck and arm.”

The charges read in part, “The two defendants were reasonably suspected to have committed the offences of conspiracy and attempted murder on February 26, 2022, around 8.30pm.”

The police prosecutor, Insp. Caleb Leramo, said, “The offences committed by the defendants run contrary to sections 516 and 320 of the Criminal Code Cap. C16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.”
Leramo urged the court to remand the defendants.

He said, “Granting the remand order will allow the police to complete their investigation and forward their case file to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.”

Magistrate Saka Afunso, in his ruling, said, “The defendants are hereby ordered to be remanded in the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti, pending when the legal advice would be ready. The prosecution is also ordered to send the duplicate case file to the DPP for legal advice.”

Afunso adjourned the matter till April 7 for mention.
