Eight returnee Almajiri children test positive for Coronavirus in Gombe

The Gombe State Commissioner for Education who is a member of the state task force on COVID-19, Dr Habu Dahiru, has said eight out of 48 almajirai returned from Kano State tested positive for COVID-19.

Dahiru stated this on Thursday while responding to questions on the status of some of the almajirai children received from other states.

He explained that upon receipt of the children, the task force quarantined them in a centre at the NYSC temporary camp in Amanda.

He said, “Eight almajirai out of the 48 that were returned to Gombe from Kano, tested positive for the virus.”

Meanwhile, the Chairman, Gombe State COVID-19 task force, Prof. Idris Mohammed, also confirmed 103 positive cases of the coronavirus in the state, while stating some of the measures the task force put in place to forestall a recurrence of the protest.

“The state government is also planning to create recreational facilities in Kwadon isolation centre for asymptomatic patients.

“Taking into cognisance of probably being the breadwinners of their families, the state government has plans in the pipeline to extend palliatives to families of those that are in the isolation centres.

“In relation to the isolation centre in Gombe State, I wish to inform you that the task force intends to provide recreational facilities, such as table tennis, football, satellite television, in the isolation centres, so as to keep the isolated people busy and to keep them away from mischief,” Mohammed said.

He also told journalists that the task force was considering all aspects of security in the isolation centres and intended to liaise with the security agencies for advice.

“On the medical professional aspect, we note that one of the possible causes of disquiet is probably lack of understanding of COVID-19, although we have been doing counseling before; we need to double up with pre and post-test counseling. This is a well-known procedure, which has been applied in this country and world over in a very long time, particularly in tackling diseases such as HIV/AIDS.
