EFCC orders bankers’ asset declaration forms, gives deadline

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, on Tuesday disclosed that the commission will from June 1 be requesting the asset declaration forms of bankers.

Bawa declared that the decision was in accordance with the Bank’s provisions, Employees Declaration of Asset Act.

The EFCC chairman announced this in an interview with State House journalists after a meeting he had with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Bawa stated that he was working hard towards forming a new commission that will be distinct in the technique it deals with cases.

He said he would perform his responsibility to guarantee that Nigeria is liberated from financial crimes.

The EFCC boss said, “We understood that at the tail end of every financial crime, it is for the criminal to have access to the funds that he or she has illegitimately acquired and we are worried about the roles of financial institutions.

“We have discussed, but we hope that all financial institutions, particularly the bankers, will declare their assets as provided for by the law, in accordance with the Bank, Employees Declaration of Asset Act.

“The EFCC, come June 1, 2021, will be demanding for this asset declaration forms, filled by the bankers, so that the line that we have drawn from June 1 is really complied with by bankers in particular.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is a Nigerian law enforcement agency that investigates financial crimes such as advance fee fraud (419 fraud) and money laundering.

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is Abdulrasheed Bawa.

He replaced Umar Mohammed Abba, the acting Chairman of the commission. Until his appointment, he was the Deputy Chief Superintendent of the anti-graft agency.

Bawa was nominated as substantive Chairman of EFCC on 16th February, 2021, and on 24th February, 2021 he was confirmed by the National Assembly as the Executive Chairman.
