The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Uyo Zonal Command, has commenced investigations into the activities of eight individuals suspected of engaging in illegal oil bunkering in Akwa Ibom State.

According to Dele Oyewale, the spokesperson for the EFCC, the suspects were apprehended by the Nigeria Navy Ship, Forward Operating Base (FOB) Ibaka, on February 23.

They were found aboard a wooden boat named MV Jasmine, allegedly dealing in petroleum products without the requisite licensing.

Although the suspects have not been named, Oyewale revealed that they were caught in possession of 30,000 litres of petroleum products suspected to be crude oil, stored in four plastic tanks.

The suspects, along with the seized exhibits, were handed over to the EFCC on April 3 by the Commanding Officer of FOB Ibaka, Capt. Uche Aneke.

Oyewale reiterated the EFCC’s commitment to conducting a thorough investigation into the matter to uncover any illegal activities and ensure that justice is served.
