Eedris Turayo Abdulkareem Ajenifuja, popularly known as Eedris Abdulkareem, is a Nigerian hip hop artist, songwriter and singer.

EARLY LIFE
Eedris Turayo Abdulkareem Ajenifuja was born in Kano, Nigeria on December 24th, 1974 to a father from Ilesa, Osun state and a mother from Ogun state, but he adopted Kano as his state of origin. Eedris is a Nigerian hip hop and revolutionary artist.

CAREER
Eedris who started to rap while he was a student, came to limelight after being part of the group, Remedies which includes the likes of Tony Tetuilla and Eddy Montana before they finally went their seperate ways with each atking up a solo career. He released his first solo album, “Pass” in 2002 which was well received by music pundits. He followed it up with Mr Lecturer, which mainly focuses on the sexual harrassment in Universities.

He dropped another album “Jaga Jaga” in 2004 which was even more controversial than his previous ones. The song is centered on the corruption and suffering in Nigeria. However, the song was banned on radio and television stations by the then president, Olusegun Obasanjo, although it continued to be played in nightclubs. The album dropped to critical acclaim, and the cover of the album was designed by the great Ghariokwu Lemi, who designed Most of Fela Kutis Classic album covers. Abdulkareem was also voted alongside great personalities like Dora akunyili, pat utomi and others by millions of Nigerians to represent Nigeria and carry the Olympic torch relay.

Also in 2004, Abdulkareem came to international attention as a result of a scuffle with American rapper 50 Cent on board an airplane at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos. By all accounts, Abdulkareem had tried to occupy 50 Cent’s seat, resulting in a fight between Abdulkareem, his friends, and 50 Cent’s bodyguards. One of Abdulkareem’s associates was hospitalised as a result, and 50 Cent returned to the United States, refusing to appear at a scheduled concert in Port Harcourt. 

In 2005, the rapper launched his own record label, Lakreem Music and released his 4th album “Letter to Mr President”, an album which addresses Obasanjo’s criticism’s on the song “Jaga Jaga”. It also featured “Flash up, Unu lighter” and a tribute to Obasanjo’s wife, Stella who dies after undergoing surgery and also to the victims of the Bellview Airlines crash.

Eedris is considered by many as the heir to Fela Anikulapo kuti’s throne of fighting through his music for the downtrodden. He has mentioned in his musics and interviews that Fela is his hero and inspiration. 

Within the first quarter of 2021, he released a series of songs, with the visuals by Frizzle and Brizzle making a lot of waves, including the much awaited “Jaga Jaga Reloaded” featuring Raw Nwanne and Madarocker. He followed this with the crowd pleasing single “Oti Get E” in response to a federal minister’s rant about his name being added to the list of the inglorious cabal holding down Nigeria’s development in the song “Jaga Jaga Reloaded”. Both of these singles trended on the social media for weeks and form part of the topical issues in many quarters.

FAMILY
Born to a polygamous family, Eedris lost his father when he was 2 years old. Abdulkareem got married in 2004 after briefly dating his then girlfriend Yetunde, and they both have 4 children including; Tolani, Titomi and Abdulrahim.


PERSONAL LIFE
In 2000, Abdulkareem was among the personalities voted for by the Nigerian public to carry the Olympic torch in a relay through the country.

ACHIEVEMENT
He won a Special Recognition Award for his remarkable contributions to the growth of the Entertainment Industry in Nigeria at the 2016 edition of City People Entertainment Awards on July 24th, 2016.
