Dutch Government Set To Expel Russian Diplomats

Published

on

The Dutch government has announced that it will expel a number of Russian diplomats, accusing Russia of attempting to smuggle intelligence officers into the Netherlands under diplomatic cover.

The move comes after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine almost a year ago, which sparked a war on Europe’s eastern flank.

The Dutch government has attempted to find a solution to the diplomatic dispute, but says that Russia has continued its efforts to post intelligence officers in the Netherlands.

The Dutch government has given the Russian diplomats two weeks to leave the country, and has ordered a Russian trade office in Amsterdam to shut by Tuesday.

The government has also decided to limit the number of Russian diplomats at the embassy in The Hague to match the number of Dutch diplomats in Moscow.

The Dutch consulate in St Petersburg will be closed, and Russia is refusing to grant visas to Dutch diplomats to staff the Netherlands’s consulate in St Petersburg and embassy in Moscow.
