A driver in Anambra State narrowly escaped death after his truck crashed and caught fire along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway on Sunday.
The driver, who has not been identified, was transporting foreign woods to a destination in the state when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash.
The impact of the crash created a fire that engulfed the truck, along with the goods it was carrying, which were worth millions of naira.
Eyewitnesses at the scene of the accident, which occurred opposite the Zim Zam Hotel around Enugu-Agidi Junction, alerted the state fire service to the incident.
Firefighters from the agency were able to contain the blaze, and there were no casualties reported.
The state fire chief, Martin Agbili, confirmed the incident in a statement, explaining that the agency received a distress call and immediately deployed its firefighters and fire trucks to the scene.
He also noted that the driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the crash and subsequent fire.
The statement read, “Around 2.29pm on Sunday, the Anambra State Fire Service received a distress call of a fire outbreak at Enugu-Agidi Junction, opposite the Zim Zam Hotel along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway on a 911 lorry carrying foreign woods.
“Immediately, we deployed our fire truck and fire-fighters to the scene for proper firefighting operation. The fire emanated during a road crash as the driver of the lorry lost control of the steering. There was no loss of life during the road crash and fire outbreak.”
