Do you feel at home with your spouse?

Leaving Nigeria for vacation, business or academic purpose is a worthy adventure. Being away gives you an opportunity to meet new people, access to social amenities like light, water and good roads, food, sightseeing and top on the list is the serenity that comes with escaping the Lagos hustle and traffic. But, I also discovered that after a few weeks out of Naija and once you have taken in all of the fun, you will start to miss home again. Although your English is flawless, you will suddenly discover you have an accent once you step out of Naija. Getting foreigners to pronounce your funky Naija name correctly will become an ordeal. I once told a foreigner my name is BOSUN, and he said oh BOSTON, Cool. Also, leaving home burdens you with the challenge to blend in, because things are so different when you are not at home.

We all work towards making our homes a beautiful and comfortable place, but luxuries do not define a home. A home is a place where you experience joy and peace regardless of the level of comfort.

Home is not necessarily a place where every member thinks alike. But, it is a place where you all speak the same language.

A home is a place where any form of pretense is unnecessary.

It is a place where you can be yourself without any fear of being judged of criticized. Your weaknesses are apparent at home, yet you are loved indiscriminately.

Home is somewhere you run to when you err. It is a place where you are told the truth and reprimanded for your wrong. But despite your wrongs, you are never rejected or abandoned at home.

Home is where you go to with your challenges even when they do not have the capacity to solve your problems.

Everything is freely shared at home. Remember how you used to borrow your sibling’s shoes and clothes?

Home is where you long to be and never in a hurry to leave.

Most people’s first experience of a home is their parent’s house. Why then do we get married if the home is as sweet as I have described it to be?

What makes a home is not the location; it is how the people in it make you feel. Hence, marriage does not deprive us of being at home; it renews the feeling of home in a more dynamic way.

The big question for singles is this, do you feel at home with your spouse or will you become homesick after marriage?

Running the home check is a vital way to figure out if your choice of a spouse is the right one. Do you speak the same language? Do you feel supported when going through a challenge? Do you have zero need for pretense around your spouse? Can you openly declare your wrong when you err? Do you feel at home with this person?
