NEITI data center secures diplomatic backing for transparency

The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has received significant backing from the Belgian Embassy, as well as the Australian and Canadian High Commissions, for its Open Data Policy.

During a visit to NEITI’s newly inaugurated Data Center in Abuja on Wednesday, the diplomats pledged their countries’ support to enhance transparency in Nigeria’s extractive sectors.

Belgian Ambassador Pieter Leenknegt, along with Canadian High Commissioner Jamie Christoff and Australian High Commissioner Leilani Bin-Juda, commended NEITI’s efforts to combat corruption through data transparency.

The diplomats toured the multi-million Naira facility, which is designed to serve as a comprehensive repository of information on Nigeria’s oil, gas, and mining industries.

The diplomatic envoys expressed their commitment to assist NEITI by providing training, technical support, and skills development, essential for the effective utilization of the Data Center.

NEITI’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, noted that the NEITI Data Center is crucial for supporting evidence-based reforms and aligning with global transparency standards.

Dr. Orji also discussed the challenges posed by the global shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy, particularly for oil-dependent countries like Nigeria. He emphasized the need for strengthened international partnerships to navigate these challenges and sustain economic stability.

The visit marked a significant step in deepening cooperation between NEITI and the international community, reinforcing the importance of transparency and collaboration in managing natural resources.
