De Ligt: "I'm not happy with the signing" — Paul Scholes

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has made his feeling clear on the club’s signing of Matthijs de Ligt and slammed Erik ten Hag’s decision to sanction such move.

Paul Scholes threw some serious critique over Manchester United’s decision to splash £43 million on Matthijs de Ligt, raising serious doubts about the Dutchman’s quality.

In a candid critique, the iconic midfielder didn’t hold back, labeling De Ligt as a “second-rate defender” who failed to impress at both Juventus and Bayern Munich.

With Manchester United also securing Noussair Mazraoui in the £60 million double swoop, Scholes is puzzled by the club’s decision to bring in players who might struggle to make the starting XI. The outspoken former midfielder even went so far as to express concern that Tottenham’s Eric Dier would start ahead of De Ligt if he were on the team.

“I’m not joking; that is a massive concern for me. You’re bringing in players for £40million, £50million, okay, just because he’s played for them three or four years ago.

“Juventus got rid of him; he wasn’t good enough at Juventus, he obviously hasn’t been good enough for Bayern Munich. He’s coming to us almost like a second-rate defender now.”

Scholes’ scathing remarks highlight a growing unease among fans about the club’s transfer strategy under Erik ten Hag, particularly the decision to reunite with former players who haven’t proven themselves at the highest level.

The former Ajax defender will be heading into Manchester United with a lot to prove not only to fans but to pundits who share Paul Scholes’ views as well.
