Dangote denies government incentives for refinery
Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, stated on Saturday that he did not receive any incentives from the Nigerian government for his $20 billion refinery project at the Lekki Free Trade Zone.
Dangote made this declaration during a visit from the House of Representatives’ leadership, including Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.
Dangote clarified, “In the refinery, we did not, and I repeat, we did not collect one single incentive from the Federal Government of Nigeria or even Lagos State. Yes, the Lagos State gave us a good deal but we paid $100 million for the land. It wasn’t free land; we paid for it.”

He also emphasized that the majority of Nigerians support the project, which encourages ongoing efforts and investments.
Additionally, Dangote urged the House of Representatives to investigate the quality of diesel and petrol at filling stations, refuting claims that petroleum products from his refinery are substandard. He called for the establishment of a committee to test products at various filling stations nationwide, highlighting the damage caused to vehicles and engines by substandard fuels.
“We are not discouraged; we will continue what we are doing,” Dangote affirmed, expressing his commitment to maintaining high standards and addressing fuel quality concerns.
This visit and Dangote’s statements come amid ongoing discussions about the impact and operations of his refinery project, underscoring its significance to Nigeria’s economy and infrastructure.
