Customs seizes smuggled goods worth N2.8bn, arrests murder suspects

The Nigerian Customs Service has confirmed the seizure smuggled goods with a duty paid value of N2,826,486,890, during a warehouse raid in Lagos.

The Acting Controller, Federal Operations Unit, Deputy Comptroller Hussein Ejibunu, disclosed during a press briefing on Monday that the seizures was made by the Zone A Unit of the NCS within 6 weeks.

He also added that two prime suspects linked to the death of two Customs men in Ogun State were also arrested.

Ejibunu stated that several items, including cannabis and 1,009 cartons of expired drinks labelled in Chinese language, were uncovered in the warehouse.

He displayed the smuggled goods which included 13,342 bags of 50kg parboiled rice, 175 sacks of used shoes, 285 cartons of Basmati  rice, 464 cartons of tomato paste, 694 bales of second-hand clothing and 5,413 cartons of medications without NAFDAC numbers or certification.

Ejibunu said the revenue generated within the period under review was N104,377,682.25, adding that the command would continually combat smuggling activities in the state.
