Customs seizes drugs worth Over N117 million in Ogun State
The Ogun Area 1 Command of the Nigerian Customs Service has intercepted illicit drugs valued at N117,587,405, including cannabis sativa and Tramaking tablets.
Comptroller James Ojo, Controller of the Command, disclosed this during a media briefing on Friday while handing over the contraband to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). He described the scale of drug smuggling as “alarming and worrisome,” highlighting its threat to national security.
The seized items included 403 sacks and 6,504 parcels of cannabis sativa weighing 7,217.7 kg, alongside 362 packs of Tramaking tablets (225 mg). These were intercepted in hotspots across Ogun State, such as the Agbawo/Iganokoto area in Yewa North and Imeko Afon Local Government Areas.
Breakdown of the cannabis seizure revealed 5,256 coconut-size wraps valued at N46.98 million, 46 book-size wraps at N411,179, and 1,202 bread-size wraps at N10.74 million. Additionally, 403 sacks of cannabis sativa were worth N16.01 million.
Ojo noted the Command’s sustained efforts against drug trafficking, which yielded significant results from January to November 21, 2024. Recent operations between October 13 and November 12 led to the interception of 1,373 parcels of cannabis and 362 packs of Tramaking tablets abandoned in locations including Abeokuta, Agbawo/Iganokoto, and Imeko Afon.
Commending his officers for their bravery, Ojo warned smugglers to desist or face strict legal consequences.
NDLEA Idiroko Special Command’s Olusegun Adeyeye praised the synergy between the Customs and NDLEA in combating drug trafficking.
“This seizure demonstrates the effectiveness of our collaboration in protecting Nigeria’s youth and communities from the dangers of drug abuse,” Adeyeye said.
The authorities reaffirmed their commitment to curbing the menace of drug smuggling through enhanced cooperation and intelligence-sharing.
