Gov. Bassey Otu appoints new chairman for Cross River State council of chiefs
Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River has appointed His Royal Majesty, Ovai Solomon Edward, the Paramount Ruler of Abi Local Government Area, as the new Chairman of the State Council of Chiefs. The announcement was made in a statement by Prof. Anthony Owan-Enoh, Secretary to the Government of Cross River, on Friday.
This appointment follows the dissolution of the previous council on June 14, whose tenure had expired years ago. The State House of Assembly had earlier passed a resolution calling for a change in the leadership of the council due to the extended term of the former chiefs.
Governor Otu cited Section 3 of the Council of Chiefs Law of Cross River, 2004, as the basis for the dissolution and the subsequent appointment. The new chairman’s term will last for two years, effective from June 21.
According to NAN, the position of the Cross River State Council of Chiefs is rotated among the state’s three senatorial districts. The newly appointed chairman, His Royal Majesty Ovai Solomon Edward, hails from the Central Senatorial District. Following his two-year term, the role will shift to the Northern Senatorial District, before returning to the Southern Senatorial District.
