Could Nigeria’s Taiwo Awoniyi bridge the Divide?

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi

Former Liverpool forward, Taiwo Awoniyi has been one striker that has been in form in Europe this recently concluded campaign, with the Nigerian International netting a total of 15 goals for Union Berlin.

Though the Nigerian spent 6 years being a Liverpool player, he never got a chance to represent the club in a competitive match, after being hindered by Visa related issues that forced Liverpool to keep sending him out on successive loan spells.

But after his performance, the Union Berlin forward is being looked at by Liverpool’s arch rivals, Manchester United as an alternative should they fail to get Benfica star, Darwin Nunez.

Nunez is rumored to favor a move to Liverpool instead of Manchester United next season, as he considers the prospects of playing in the UEFA Champions League next season. It is one of the conditions that may prove difficult to foster negotiations between both parties.

Hence, United may be at a disadvantage should Liverpool or any other club come to contend the Benfica striker with them.

With Anthony Martial and Rashford linked with exit away from Manchester this coming season as new manager Erik Ten Haag looks to rebuild the team, United are said to consider other cheap prospects that will fit in Ten Haag’s ideology.

The 24-year-old Nigerian has already helped the Iron Ones qualify for Europe this season, a performance which could stage a return to England this summer with West Ham, Southampton, and Newcastle already reportedly to be interested in his services.
