Coronavirus kills Afro-jazz legend Manu Dibango at 86

Cameroonian Afro-jazz legend, Manu Dibango has passed on at the age of 86, TopNaija.ng reports.

 

The family of the Cameroonian singer and saxophonist on his facebook page on Tuesday, announced on his death from the consequences of the new coronavirus.

The author of one of the biggest planetary hits in world music, “Soul Makossa” (1972), is the first world celebrity to die from the virus. He died in the early hours of the morning in a hospital in the Paris region,” Thierry Durepaire, manager of the artist’s music publishing business, told AFP.

A statement released by the family reads: “It is with deep sadness that we announce to you the loss of Manu Dibango, our Papy Groove, who passed away on 24th of March 2020, at 86 years old, due to covid-19.”

The message on his official Facebook page also confirmed that his death had come after he contracted COVID-19.

“His funeral service will be held in strict privacy, and a tribute to his memory will be organized when possible,” the message said.

The saxophonist was one of the pioneers of Afro jazz and also fused funk with traditional Cameroonian music.

In 2009, he accused Michael Jackson of borrowing one of his hooks for two songs on the legendary “Thriller” album. Jackson settled out of court.
