How cooking gas price surged by 39% in one year under Buhari – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has released a report revealing that the price of cooking gas has increased from N7,413.25 in January 2022 to N10,277.17 in January 2023, representing a 38.63% increase on a year-on-year basis.

 

However, the cost of refilling it increased only slightly by 0.28% from N10,248.97 in December 2022 to N10,277.17 in January 2023. The report also showed that Benue had the highest average retail price for 12.5kg of cooking gas, while Yobe had the lowest.

Additionally, the average price of 5kg of cooking gas increased slightly from N4,565.56 in December 2022 to N4,588.75 in January 2023, representing a 0.15% increase on a month-on-month basis, and a 25.46% increase on a year-on-year basis. The report showed that Kwara had the highest average price for 5kg cooking gas, while Enugu had the lowest.

The average retail price per litre of kerosene increased by 4.42% on a month-on-month basis from N1,104.61 in December 2022 to N1,153.40 in January 2023. The report showed that Abuja had the highest average price per litre of kerosene, while Jigawa had the lowest.

There has been an increase in the prices of cooking gas and kerosene on a year-on-year basis, which may lead to higher expenses for households. It is important for households to conserve energy and make use of alternative sources of energy to reduce their expenses.
