Coming to America actor John Amos is dead

Legendary actor John Amos, beloved for his role as James Evans Sr. on Good Times, has passed away at the age of 84. The Emmy-nominated actor, who graced both television and film for decades, died of natural causes in Los Angeles on August 21, his son Kelly Christopher Amos announced.

John Amos’ death comes weeks after co-star in Coming to America; James Earl Jones died.

Known for more than just his portrayal of the tough-love patriarch, John Amos captured the hearts of millions in iconic roles like Gordy the Weatherman on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and as the unforgettable older Kunta Kinte in Roots, a performance that earned him critical acclaim and an Emmy nod.

He also brought comedic flair to the screen as Cleo McDowell in Coming to America alongside Eddie Murphy.

In a heartfelt message, Kelly shared, “My father was the kindest soul. His work, both on and off the screen, touched countless lives. Fans saw him as their own TV dad, and his legacy will continue to inspire.”

Beyond his famed characters, Amos held a recurring role as Admiral Percy Fitzwallace on The West Wing, further cementing his place in television history.

Though his passing leaves a void, John’s impact will continue to resonate in the worlds of entertainment and family alike. He is survived by his two children, Shannon and Kelly Christopher, with whom he shared a complex but enduring bond.
