Coalition urges NNPCL to remove hidden fuel levies

The Coalition for Energy Reforms and Good Governance Advocacy urged the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) on Sunday to remove hidden levies and tariffs on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), often known as petrol, sourced locally from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

The alliance said that removing the tariffs and charges would make the goods more accessible to Nigerians and put a stop to residents’ deteriorating circumstances.

Dr Jonathan Amande, the coalition’s Executive Director, announced an Abuja release.

The call came in response to the NNPCL’s latest rise in petrol pump prices, which sparked a significant outcry throughout Nigeria.

Concerned citizens are asking what caused the fuel price increase while the product is being processed locally.

In response to the increase, the Coalition urged NNPCL to immediately eliminate hidden charges on fuel prices from the Dangote Refinery, claiming that these levies had been added to the publicly declared Premium, inspection fee, margin, and NMDPRA (Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority) fee.

It argued that “these invisible government levies, including those from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, are unjustified and inflates the cost of locally produced fuel.

“These levies, which have no place in the local production and sale of petroleum products, prevent the Dangote Refinery from selling fuel at more affordable prices.

“Without these additional charges, some of which are layered on the crude supply, local refineries could potentially sell fuel at prices as low as ₦400 per litre,” the Coalition asserted.
