Clubs Were Afraid Of Signing—Leon Balogun reveals

Leon Balogun, Super Eagles defender and former Rangers player, has discussed his situation following the recent close of the summer transfer market.

At the end of the 2021/22 season, Balogun, who is currently 34 years old, lost his contract with Scottish powerhouse Rangers and became a free agent.

The Nigerian international revealed he had to practice alone seeing as he was without a club until late August, when Queens Park Rangers (QPR) of the English Championship signed him to a one-year free transfer deal.

Since then, Balogun has played in eight (8) league games for QPR and scored his first goal for the team in a recent 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic, helping QPR to the top of the Championship table.

The Super Eagles defender acknowledged that things were not always easy for him due to him encountering a “difficult” summer where no one wanted to sign him after being released by the Glasgow Rangers.

The former Brighton defender said that some clubs balked at signing him due to his advanced age.

Balogun stated to Football League World that:

It was a long summer. I stayed up in Glasgow the whole time just trying to stay fit and not to lose my mind, but it was very, very challenging. I can’t lie.

That’s the game nowadays. They see a certain number, which is the age, and they are like ‘nah’.”

The Super Eagles defender did admit, though, that he knew he still had it in him when Michael Beale, his former coach at Rangers, was willing to consider him and a take a risk on signing him for QPR.

That’s what I had to deal with loads in the beginning, which obviously made it even more challenging because I know what I’m still capable of,” Balogun explained.

It was just a matter of who is out there that believes in it? When QPR really had a go at me, I was like ‘right, let’s get this over the line. Let me reunite with Mick and see if we can be as successful as possible.”

In the eight (8) games the Super Eagles defender has played this season, Queens Park Rangers have won five (5), lost two (2), and drawn one (1) of them while Balogun has appeared.

From one Rangers to another it will appear for Leon Balogun.
