Cumbria Police confirmed that mountain rescue and air ambulances had to be scrambled in order to rescue the climbers.
‘Persons stuck on mountain after taking cannabis. Now having to deploy mountain rescue, air support and ambulance to rescue them,’ Cumbria Police tweeted.

They later followed up: ‘Persons rescued after becoming incapable of walking due to cannabis use.

The Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association, which was part of the rescue operation, added that such calls were ‘becoming a joke’.
Many on Twitter called the group ‘idiotic’, with one suggesting: ‘There should be a mandatory financial charge for this sort of thing.’
Others, however, suggested the police ‘just send a Toffee Crisp’ and ‘Monster Munch’.
While one person simply asked: ‘How high are they?’
