Civil Society groups decry clampdown on #RevolutionNow protesters
Lawyers, human rights activists, and Civil society groups across Nigeria, on Tuesday, called on the Federal Government to decry the clamping down on the #RevolutionNow protesters on Monday by security agencies.
They also excoriated the government over the continued detention of Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the #RevolutionNow protest. Sowore was arrested in the early hours of Saturday by the Department of State Services for “threatening national security and public safety.”
The CSOs including the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre; the Socio-Economic Right and Accountability Project and 49 other civil society organisations on Tuesday faulted the manner with which the Nigerian authority clamped down on the protesters on Monday.
But despite growing opposition to his continued detention, the DSS on Tuesday applied to the Federal High Court in Abuja for an order to allow it to keep Sowore for 90 days.
Also, the police on Tuesday arraigned six persons arrested in Lagos during the #RevolutionNow protest on Monday on two counts bordering on the unlawful assembly before the Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Ebute Metta.
