choose your battles in life carefully

“Choose your battles wisely. After all, life isn’t measured by how many times you stood up to fight. It’s not winning battles that makes you happy, but it’s how many times you turned away and chose to look into a better direction. Life is too short to spend it on warring. Fight only the most, most, most important ones, let the rest go.” — C. JoyBell C.

Most of us have been advised at one time or another to choose our battles carefully. We know its good advice but we barely understand what it means. Choose your battles means to be selective of the problems or confrontations you get involved in and saving your time only for the things that matter. This means the most important things, the things that give you the highest payoff, and battles where you have a good chance of success. This attitude applies to your work, relationships, and life.

Like it or not, your capacity is limited. You cannot do everything. That’s why it’s important that you pick your battles carefully. There are battles in life that you should get involved with and battles that you should not. So choose your battles carefully. If you have not been invited to participate by all parties or it doesn’t directly affect you, you should pause. Is there a situation in which you should rethink about getting involved? Is there a situation in which you are already involved that you may need to remove yourself?

You need to think it through before committing your resources, your time, energy, and money to something. If you try to do too much, you will either accomplish nothing or end up with a bunch of mediocre things. Ask yourself:

Is it worth doing?

Is it worth fighting for?

Is it something that you can keep building on year after year?

Weigh the options before you make your decision.

Think long term and choose your battles wisely.
