China Set To Create 30 Key Automotive Chip Standards By 2025

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has released a draft proposal outlining plans to create over 30 key automotive chip standards by 2025.

This is part of the country’s broader initiative to accelerate the development of its homegrown semiconductor industry.

The draft proposal was released on Tuesday and is open for public feedback. It outlines that the proposed standards will cover general requirements such as environment and reliability, electromagnetic compatibility, functional safety, and information security, as well as key product and application technical requirements such as control chips, computing chips, memory chips, power chips and communication chips.

The proposed standards reflect China’s growing emphasis on self-reliance in the field of semiconductors, which has become increasingly important due to the country’s strained trade relationship with the US.

China is the world’s largest consumer of semiconductors, yet it has to import most of its semiconductor chips from foreign companies.

The new standards aim to improve the quality and performance of locally produced chips, reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, and bolster the competitiveness of the domestic semiconductor industry.

The automotive industry is one of the key target areas, given the growing demand for chips in electric vehicles, autonomous driving systems, and other advanced automotive applications.

This move is part of China’s broader strategy to achieve technological self-sufficiency and reduce its dependence on foreign technology.
