Chelsea: “We need top, proven Centre Backs” — Mikel Obi
Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has called on Chelsea’s new manager to prioritize signing two world-class centre-backs during the summer transfer window. Mikel’s comments come as Enzo Maresca is poised to make his first acquisition for the Blues, with Tosin Adarabioyo set to join from Fulham on a free transfer.
Mikel, who enjoyed a successful career at Stamford Bridge, emphasized the importance of filling the void left by the departure of veteran defender Thiago Silva. He expressed doubts about the readiness of current young defenders Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi to take on key roles in Chelsea’s backline.
“Thiago Silva is leaving, and we need a couple of centre-halves,” Mikel said on The Obi One Podcast.
“I don’t think Benoit Badiashile is the guy for Chelsea, no. [Axel] Disasi, no. They’re still young players, they will develop. We need proven, top centre-backs who will come in and stabilize that back four. We need that. We need two world-class centre-halves.”
Mikel’s remarks highlight the defensive challenges facing Chelsea as they prepare for the upcoming season. The potential signing of Adarabioyo is seen as a step in the right direction, but Mikel Obi believes additional reinforcements are crucial to ensure stability and success for the club.
