Chelsea: "Trust the process" -- Is Maresca already giving excuses?

Taking a premier league job is no easy task, let alone for an up and coming manager looking to boost his CV like Enzo Maresca and starting that with a big club like Chelsea, there is a lot of fear to it.

Earlier today, the former Leicester City boss gave his first interview for Chelsea, and though there are lots of optimist words to be taken out from his quotes, Blues fans who have grown to become well accustomed to quick successes may not want to hear a certain line from his speech to fans.

‘Trust the process’, it is a very common line that has become so connected to another manager who like Maresca, currently manages a London team also playing in the premier league, however, situated in North London. Yes — Arsenal. That line was particularly the one Mikel Arteta came with to Arsenal, and though the Spaniard has gone on to achieve some positives at the Emirates, his success are however relative to what the Chelsea fans know.

During Mikel Arteta’s now 5-year stay at North London, the Blues have not only won the Champions League but also the Club World Cup, becoming the third premier league side to do so after Manchester United and Liverpool, under Thomas Tuchel. Add to that, Chelsea have been in multiple domestic finals even though they may have fallen short of silverware at the end of those meetings.

Hence, Enzo Maresca coming up with the line ‘Trust the process’, breeds a different kind of fear to the Chelsea fans who will be frightened of taking the long path that their London rivals have taken before actually becoming a top contender for a premier league title.

Speaking to the club’s official media team, Maresca says;

“When you join a club like Chelsea, you know it’s a club that has to win. We’re going to try to do our best to fight and be there with the clubs that in this moment are winning, and are fighting to win titles.”

The former Manchester City assistant manager under Pep Guardiola then goes on to promise the fans, saying;

“We are going to enjoy the journey, for sure.”

However, the Italian’s next words, is one the impatient fan base may be wary of, considering the team has spent 2-seasons on the sidelines and away from where the action is — challenging for titles.

“Like every club, like every manager, it will not be easy, but for sure we will enjoy the journey. Trust the process, trust the idea, be behind the team,” Maresca carefully puts it.

Hence, though the prospect of a new dawn and era beckoning the 2-time Champions of Europe, there is also a lingering fear that another slow process may begin its cycle again.
