Chelsea star, Mason Mount deletes Twitter account

Mason Mount, the 24-year-old midfielder for Chelsea, has given an explanation behind his decision to delete his Twitter account, which had amassed 1.8 million followers.

In a tweet on Thursday, Mount said, “Over the years I’ve thoroughly enjoyed connecting with you all on Twitter. Sadly, the platform is changing so I have decided to delete my account. You all can still connect with me on my other social media platforms here: http://masonmount.Komi.io. Take care, Mason.”

Mason Mount, who came through the ranks at Chelsea, made his debut for the club in 2019 under manager Frank Lampard and has gone on to make 195 appearances, scoring 33 goals. In recent months, his future at Stamford Bridge has become the talk of the town, with his contract due to expire at the end of the 2023/2024 season. To date, it is believed that no agreement has been reached between the club and the player over a potential new deal.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Chelsea will have to make a decision on whether to cash in on Mason Mount or let him run down his contract and lose him for free next summer.

Recently, interim boss Lampard spoke about Mount, stating,

“Mason has always been a fantastic player for me at Derby and Chelsea. I know he’s had a few slight injury problems. I need to speak to him and find out where he’s at, but I know what I get from Mason. He’s a huge player for Chelsea.” Lampard went on to say that “modern-day football has big squads” and that “maybe in the short term, that’s a positive thing for me because everyone can have a clean slate.”

Mount’s decision to delete his Twitter account comes at a time when social media has come under scrutiny for its impact on mental health.

A growing number of professional footballers have opted to take a break from social media platforms in recent months, including Marcus Rashford, Thierry Henry, and Wilfried Zaha, citing the need to protect their mental health from the abuse and negativity that can be directed towards them.
