Chelsea pitfall: Who carries the blame?

What is wrong with Chelsea football club? How the mighty are fallen…

Chelsea Football Club’s struggles under interim boss Frank Lampard continue, with the team suffering a sixth straight loss after a 3-1 defeat against Arsenal.

The Gunners, who were coming off a 4-1 defeat against Manchester City, put in a strong performance at the Emirates Stadium, with Martin Odegaard scoring a brace and Gabriel Jesus adding a third in a breathtaking first half.

Noni Madueke scored a consolation goal for Chelsea, who saw Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang touch the ball only nine times in 45 minutes on his return to Arsenal.

With this loss, Chelsea remains in 12th place in the Premier League table, level on points with Bournemouth, who have recently pulled away from relegation danger. If the season started on October 29th, the Blues would be in the relegation zone, having taken just 18 points from 22 games in that period. Everton, who were managed by Lampard during that time, have only accrued 16 points from the same number of games.

Chelsea has not won a game since March 11th when they defeated Leicester City away from home. They are also not yet mathematically safe from relegation. The west London club has over 30 players in their squad, and with four managers used in the same campaign, they are in an absolute mess.

Owner Todd Boehly has spent close to £600 million since purchasing the club.

Despite this massive investment, the team is struggling to put together a cohesive and winning performance. Chelsea has a difficult run-in to the end of the season, with games against the rest of the top three teams – Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Manchester City – as well as scheduled fixtures against Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest.

Chelsea fans will be hoping that the team can turn things around soon, but it seems that Lampard and his squad have a lot of work to do to avoid a disappointing season.

Looking at the situation at the club, a lot of questions should and will be asked concerning who really should carry weight of the blame; the players, the managers or Todd Boehly for his decisions and indecisions following his buying of the club.
