Chelsea: “Honey-moon will be over soon” — Mikel Obi
Former Super Eagles midfielder and Chelsea icon, Mikel Obi does not see the Chelsea honey-moon lasting for long.
The Blues so far this summer have amassed an eye-watering £185 million spending spree that has raised eyebrows across the football world, and that’s after spending roughly €! billion in recent transfer windows. John Mikel Obi in a recent interview, opened up on what might really be driving the club’s aggressive recruitment strategy.
According to Mikel, the wave of new signings, including stars like Pedro Neto, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Omari Kellyman, isn’t just about building a stronger squad—it’s about preparing for a potential transfer ban that could hit the club in the near future.

Premier League Wrap-up: What happened, what didn’t happen?
Speaking on beIN Sports, Mikel hinted at a looming crisis behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge.
“The club has got a lot of players, let’s put it that way,” Mikel said, alluding to the fact that Chelsea has brought in 10 players this window alone. “There is a strategy behind that… I think there is a transfer ban coming, and that is why we are stocking up on all these players to make sure that if there is a transfer ban eventually, we will have enough players to go on for the next two or three seasons.”
The approach of Chelsea this summer has certainly been unconventional, with the club handing out unusually long contracts to many of its new recruits. This tactic, often criticized for its potential financial risk, now makes more sense in light of Mikel’s comments. The Blues could be securing their future by ensuring they have a deep roster of talent to draw from, even if they’re barred from making any further signings.
If Mikel’s suspicions are correct, Chelsea’s recent activity could be a masterstroke of forward planning, with the club insulating itself from the kind of crisis that could derail their long-term ambitions. However, it also raises questions about what might have triggered such drastic measures. Could there be an ongoing investigation or regulatory scrutiny that fans aren’t yet aware of?
While the club has yet to comment on Mikel’s claims, his words have already sparked intense speculation among fans and pundits alike. If a transfer ban is indeed on the horizon, the current spending spree of Chelsea could prove to be a decisive move that shapes their future success—or failure—over the coming seasons.
