The 2023/24 season ended with the two Manchester teams at odds, and it was fitting to have them kickstart the new campaign on a similar note of rivalry. This time, Manchester City exacted their revenge at Wembley.

The Community Shield began predictably, with the Cityzens controlling the game and putting their Manchester neighbors to the test in both halves. However, it was a familiar nemesis, Alejandro Garnacho, who broke the deadlock, finishing with precision to beat the Manchester City defense and Ederson.

Manchester United seemed poised to claim their first trophy of the season, mirroring how they ended the previous one. But City’s Bernardo Silva had other plans, converting an Oscar Bobb cross past United’s goalkeeper, Andre Onana, to quickly level the score and dampen the Red Devils’ celebrations.

With both teams tied, the English season opener headed straight to penalties to decide the winner of the Community Shield. Bernardo Silva, who had earlier played hero by equalizing, turned villain during the penalty shootout, with a poorly executed spot kick that Andre Onana saved with ease.

Manchester United appeared to be on course for victory until Jadon Sancho had his penalty saved by Ederson, nullifying the Red Devils’ advantage. The decisive moment came with the seventh spot kick, where Jonny Evans missed, handing Manchester City the Community Shield.
