Chaos erupts in Brazil vs. Argentina as fans attack Police
Chaos unfolded ahead of the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina at Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Maracana stadium as fans clashed with local police, causing a delay in kickoff.
The eagerly awaited match between arch-rivals Brazil and Argentina was marred by a confrontation between fans and law enforcement on Tuesday night. Video footage emerged depicting clashes in the stands, prompting a delay in the commencement of the game.
In the footage, police were observed engaging with brawling fans, wielding batons amid the chaotic scenes. Disturbingly, a fan was seen lying on the ground, blood streaming from a head injury sustained in the altercation.
Football superstars like Lionel Messi and Marquinhos attempted to intervene and restore order by approaching the stands. In response to the upheaval, Messi led the Argentina team back to the changing room, showcasing his dissatisfaction with the situation.
Expressing his dismay on Instagram, injured Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez condemned the actions of the Brazilian police, stating,
“It’s a shame to see what Brazilian police are doing! So how can that be possible? How long we have to see these scenes?! It’s always the same [in Brazil].”
After the disturbances were quelled, the match finally commenced. However, the intensity lingered on the field, evidenced by 22 fouls and three yellow cards issued in the first half.
Ultimately, Argentina claimed a narrow 1-0 victory courtesy of defender Nicolas Otamendi’s goal in the 63rd minute. The reigning world champions now lead the CONMEBOL standings with 15 points, a two-point advantage over second-placed Uruguay.
Conversely, Brazil finds itself in sixth place, having accumulated only seven points from six matches.
Following the match, Argentine legend Lionel Messi launched a scathing critique of the police, expressing his dismay at the focus on crowd control rather than the game itself. He emphasized the team’s decision to return to the locker room as a means to mitigate the escalating situation, aiming to prevent a potential tragedy.
“We are a family. We decided to play to make the situation more calm,” Messi added.
