Chaos delivers for Liverpool, Gunners gunned in London
Leave it to ‘Chaos’ to deliver when least expected.
Just when you think the mid-week games could not get any better, Darwin Nunez produces a ‘chaotic’ classic to send Liverpool into the next round of the Carabao Cup tournament.
It was a tie that the Reds made difficult for themselves, however, some words could be said about the storm on the night that proved as much an opponent for both sides than Liverpool or Bournemouth did to themselves.
Jurgen Klopp’s men had strolled into a controlled tie that was rewarded by Cody Gakpo putting the Reds in the lead via a corner shortly before the half-time whistle. However, a defensive mishap from Liverpool, rewarded their hosts a corner of their own that was slotted in by Justin Kluivert to mark his first goal for Bournemouth.
From a position of control, the Reds found themselves scuffling to get back into the game and retake their advantage before the hosts grew too confident in the game.
And with no narrative being any better, it took a chaotic moment for the ‘Master of Chaos’ himself, Darwin Nunez to gift the Reds a stunner that advanced them into the quarter-final of the Cup.
A similar story however could not be said of Liverpool’s top 4 counterpart, Arsenal whose visit to the London Stadium left the Gunners gunned down by 3 goals to 1, thanks to goals from Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus and a gift of an own goal by Ben White for West Ham United.
The Gunners’ captain, Martin Odegaard was able to salvage a consolation for Mikel Arteta’s side, but his goal was not enough to book a ticket for the quarter-final.
Arsenal, together with Manchester club, United were eliminated from the competition, with the Red Devils suffering an agonizing 3-0 defeat for the consecutive time, but against Newcastle United.
Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton, Fulham, Newcastle United, West Ham United, Middlesbrough and Port Vale are the teams that have qualified for the quarter-finals.
