Champions League: AC Milan vs. Liverpool — Preview/Lineup

AC Milan versus Liverpool in a Champions League fixture, used to be all the rave back in the days when European royalty was a honor that only legends got to see come alive. The eras of Ricardo Kaka, Steven Gerrard and the likes took on the turf in celebration or in tears as the glory of a Champions League final stood on the line.

Flash-forward to present day 2024, the Champions League has taken on a different format, AC Milan and Liverpool are no longer the big weights they used to be, and the fixture means very little to the modern football audience. But that doesn’t stop San Siro from waiting as both European royalties take on its turf as they battle for a spot in the Champions League table.

The Reds will be looking to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat at home to Nottingham Forest, a game they played their hands into their visitors’ game plan and had nothing to show for it.

Tonight, the premier league side will have to test itself on the European stage again, albeit with a new man in the dug out as Arne Slot faces a different animal of a competition he was ever used to.

For the Rossoneri, their form so far has been somewhat mixed in comparison to Liverpool’s, with Milan suffering a defeat to Parma just recently, while playing out 2-consecutive 2-2 draws to Torino and Lazio, with a 4-0 win against Venezia the only confidence booster the Rossoneri have heading into this tie.

Of course, there is so much one win can do to lift a team’s spirit ahead of the next game, especially when that tie presents them the luxury of the San Siro.

But there is also one thing Liverpool have the advantage of in recent times or perhaps, on head-to-head basis; AC Milan have only beaten once in their last 4-meetings, and that one time being a Champions League final. This of course isn’t a Champions League final and neither is it a Group Stage meeting, hence a chance for new stories or histories to be written.

Will AC Milan be the ones to tell the story of victory versus Liverpool? Or will the Reds have to relish their history versus the Rossoneri? That all depends on whatever performance the two sides can come up with at the San Siro.
